Etymology

Drepan: Derived from the Greek word drepanon meaning “sickle.”

The suffix inae is standard taxonomic nomenclature to indicate that word pertains to a zoological subfamily.

Overview

Drepaninae is the largest of three subfamilies of hook-tipped moths in the family Drepanidae. The vast majority of genera and species within the subfamily occur in eastern Asia, but several dozen are also found in Africa with a few endemic to Madagascar.
