Etymology

Cossinae: Cossi or cossus was the Latin word for “worm,” or “grub” found in the bark of trees.

The suffix inae is standard taxonomic nomenclature to indicate that word pertains to a zoological subfamily.

Overview

The Cossinae Subfamily is represented throughout the world and conatains over twenty genera. There are five genera found in the United States. Of those five, Acossus and Prionoxystus occur in the Midwest region, however the Poplar Carpenterworm Moth Acossus centerensis has not been widely seen Indiana and not reported through the GAINLP.
